"Part of Speech" is the title of a cycle of poems created in 1975-1976. This cycle gave its name to the collection of poems published in 1977 by Ardis Publishers. The English book of poems, published in 1980 under the same title, consists only partially of translations of the poems included in the Russian edition of 1977. The translation of the "Part of Speech" cycle into English, made with the participation and under the editorship of Brodsky, included 15 out of the 20 poems in the cycle, the order of which was also altered compared to the Russian original. Joseph Alexandrovich Brodsky (1940-1996) was a Russian and American poet, essayist, playwright, translator, and educator. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1987 and served as the United States Poet Laureate from 1991 to 1992.
