The novel was initially published in five issues of the Paris almanac "Sovremennye Zapiski" (1937, 1938, nos. 63-67) in the old orthography. The sharp tone of the fourth chapter, dedicated to Chernyshevsky, caused it to be omitted in the first edition of the novel. The complete novel was finally published in 1952 by the Chekhov Publishing House in New York. This was Nabokov's first Russian book published according to the rules of the new Russian orthography. In the USSR, it was first published by Slovo/Slovo Publishing House in Moscow in 1990. The first complete edition of the novel.
