1) "The fundamental India of Louis Renou".
Autograph manuscript signed, 1 page in4. In French. Very good condition.
Review of Louis Renou's book published by Hermann: "For some forty years, France has been fortunate to have, in Louis Renou, the best specialist in fundamental India, that is to say, in the great Brahmanic tradition".
Charles Malamoud has brought together texts that had been scattered around in confidential journals, bringing out their great modernity. "It reveals a great civilisation at its most authentic: its ideology".
2) "Guy Deleury's hindu model".
Autograph manuscript signed, 1 ½ page in4. In French. Very good condition.
A review of Guy Deleury's book, published by Hachette: an essay written "with an alert and sometimes ironic pen", preferably about living India, as the author, a Jesuit, "lived for more than twenty years in a row in a Hindu environment". An experience that, too subjective, could be superficial. The author avoids this reproach, even if some
of his bold theses would benefit from "further development". "Indian society is certainly original, but is it a model”.
Jean Varenne is a French Indologist specialising in Hinduism, Sanskrit, the Vedic cosmogonies and a wide range of subjects relating to Indian tradition and the religions of ancient Iran.
Louis Renou (1896-1966) was one of the most important French Indianists of the twentieth century.
The First World War forced him to interrupt his studies. He became an agrégé in 1920. Following his agrégation, he studied Sanskrit to become an Indianist.
Charles Malamoud, born in 1929 in Chișinău (Moldavia), is a former French historian of religions, Orientalist and Indianist. A pupil of Madeleine Biardeau and Louis Renou, his work focused on the Veda and Brahmanic thought as a whole.
Guy Albert Deleury (1922-2015) is an Indian scholar, specialist in Marathi literature, writer and translator specialising in India. He was a member of the Society of Jesus from 1943 to 1973. Fundamental India by Louis RENOU, Studies in Indianism compiled and presented by Charles Malamoud, Paris, Editions Hermann, Collection "Savoir", 1978.
The Hindu Model: an essay on the structures of civilisation in India yesterday and today by Guy Deleury, preface by Roger Garaudy, Paris, Hachette, Collection "Le Temps et les hommes", 1978.
