On 7 July 1988, Sotheby's auction took place in Moscow, in Sovincenter (World Trade Centre), which became the most controversial event in the art life of the late USSR. At the initiative of Sotheby's auctioneer Simon de Pury, more than a hundred works of Russian avant-garde and works by recognised and unofficial Soviet artists were offered for sale.
