He was particularly known for his work as a costume creator for theatre and opera costumes. He was the friend of Leonor Fini and especially Yves St-Laurent with whom he was very close. He was curator of the Pierre Bergé - Yves Saint Laurent Foundation collections from 1981 to 2009.
