Fragment of a draft statement of withdrawal from the Democratic primary in California, during the 1960 presidential campaign, with reference to the state's very popular Democratic governor, Pat BROWN. Kennedy invoked the possibility of disunity caused by a contested primary: for this reason and this reason only, he decided to accede to their wishes and would not compete in the primary election. However, should a candidate other than the preferred son, Mr. Brown, enter the race, he will feel obliged to do the same. “However, if another candidate other than the favorite son Mr. Brown should enter I shall feel obliged to enter also”....
