Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, known as the Mahatma ("great soul"), born into a wealthy Indian family, Gandhi was an Indian politician and religious leader who worked for India's independence through non-violence. He was assassinated on 30 January 1948 in Delhi (India) by a Hindu extremist during a public prayer. When Mahatma Gandhi was assassinated, he was already a legend. He showed the world that social and political change can be achieved not only through violence and terror, but also through love and compassion.
