etching and aquatint in colors signed ‘Mirò’ (lower right) and numbered 64/75 (lower left) 49.5 x 65.5 cm Joan Miro created ‘Le Cosmonaute’ (The Spaceman) in 1969. It was in July of this year that Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin made the first lunar landing on the Apollo 11 mission. Since early 1940s, Miro was inspired by the space and the sky, when he found escape from the bounds and gravity of the second world war and created the series «Constallations». Since then the moon and stars, freely floating in space, became the artist’s distinctive symbols.
