signed ‘A.Popov’ (lower right) watercolor on paper 34 x 25 cm executed during the artist’s stay in German captivity in 1916-1918 Alexey Nikolaevich Popov was an artillery officer. He got his general education at the 2nd Moscow military gymnasium. He graduated from the 1st Military Pavlovsk college. A participant in the Russian-Turkish war of 1877-1878, the Russian-Japanese War of 1904-1905. Since 1909 – colonel. A participant in the First World War (commander of the 1st Rifle Park Artillery Division), was captured, where he remained until 1918. His further fate is unknown. In parallel with his military career, he practiced painting, attended the battle class of the Imperial Academy of Arts, and in 1887 he got a title of the Class artist of the 1st degree.
