Zdobnov”, stamp “Edition Iskusstvo” (on the reverse) Gelatin silver print Printed no later then mid-20th century 24.5 x 19 cm Dmitry Spiridonovich Zdobnov (1850-1914) was the elder of the two photographer brothers who opened a photo salon in Strelna in 1880 and in St. Petersburg in 1884. His photographs were published in newspapers and magazines of that time; he published in large circulation the portraits of famous cultural figures (Leo Andreev, Anton Chekhov, Alexander Kuprin, Ivan Bunin, and many others), and published a book entitled Russian Literature in Portraits of its Representatives. Zdobnov’s work was very popular among the Russian creative intelligentsia; for example, Fyodor Sologub and Anton Pavlovich Chekhov recall him in their letters.
