Édition originale de ce piquant épisode de l’histoire galante du XVIIIe siècle, ornée d’un frontispice gravée à l’eau-forte par Greux. Le maréchal de Richelieu, amoureux de Madame de La Popelinière, l’ex-actrice Mimi Dancourt, avait ingénieusement loué un immeuble contigu à l’appartement de cette dame, et pour ne pas éveiller l’humeur jalouse du mari, il pénétrait la nuit chez sa maîtresse au moyen d’une plaque tournante installée au fond de la cheminée. Émile Campardon (1837-1915) was a French historian, archivist and writer. He was an archivist and head of the judicial section of the Archives nationales de France from 1857 to 1908, and the author of numerous books. At the beginning of the 20th century he published «Quatrains and Souvenirs d’un archiviste». Intended for a circle of friends these extremely rare volumes contain amusing and impertinent portraits of archivists of the 19th century.
