Icon « Saint Nicholas »

Wood, leucas, silver leaf, colored lacquer, tempera. Size: 43X33, 5 cm. Craftwork of Kholuy village, 30-40 years. XIX century. Condition: no modern interferences, chipping and missing fragments at the edges and on the margins,fading of colored lacquer. St. Nicholas, Archbishop of Myra (V c.) – one of the most venerated Christian saints. Russian images of Nikola are known from the XI century. As a tradition St. Nicholas is depicted up to the waist, in Episcopal robes. In the medallions on the sides of the Saint the scene of the ‘Nicene miracle’ is placed - Christ and the Mother of God offer the attributes of Episcopal serving to Nicola. The orange or reddish-brown fields were the most typical feature of icons from the Kholuy workshops of the middle XIX — beginning of XX century. In kholuy icon great importance is given to ornamental decoration. Background, crowns and basis for the application of floral ornaments on clothes were made with silver leaf, that after being covered with a dark lacquer acquired the tone of gold. These parts of the icon, as a rule, were ‘minted’ as patterns in the shape of circles, starlets, scales, etc. This icon is distinguished by additional decoration with elements of the silvered framing fastened on the crown, medallions and the right hand of the Saint. Сохранность: без современных вмешательств, сколы и утраты по краям и на полях, потртости цветного лака. Святой Николай, архиепископ Мирликийский (Vв.) – один из наиболее чтимых христианских святых. Русские изображения Николы известны с XI в. Традиционно святого Николай изображается по пояс, в епископских одеяниях. В медальонах по сторонам святого помещена сцена «Никейского чуда» - Христос и Богоматерь, подносящие Николе атрибуты епископского служения. Наиболее типичным признаком икон холуйских мастерских середины XIX — начала XX в. являлись оранжевые или коричнево-красноватые поля. В холуйской иконе большое значение уделяется орнаментальному убранству. Фон, венцы и подкладки для нанесения растительного орнамента на одеждах делались из сусального серебра, которое после покрытия его темным лаком приобретало тон золота. Эти части иконы, как правило, «чеканились» узорами в виде кружков, звезодочек, чешуек и т.п. Особенностью этого образа является то, что он дополнительно украшен элементами посеребренного оклада, закреппленными на венце, медальонах и деснице святого.
