Aut. Letter. Signed to General Friedrich-Wilhelm Bauer. S.l., 9 March 1771. 1 pp. dual-lea et in-4, German, address on the back in Russian, stamped with a red seal. A very curious letter from Czarina Catherine II, asking her favourite, General Bauer, to inquire regarding a “young beauty” [jünge Schönheit] whose qualities were boasted to her; Count Orlov spoke about this to late for her to discuss it with General Orlov as a private matter; she asks to write to him discretely on this subject matter, by sending it to Count Orlov. She adds as a post-scriptum: All this must remain between us, you can say that I commissioned geographic cards from you. Of Prussian origins, Friedrich-Wilhelm Bauer (1731-1783) was an of cer, who distinguished himself during the Seven Year War, having entered the service of Catherine II in 1768. At the time, he participated actively as Major-General in the war against the Turks, by reorganizing the cartography service, by being one of the participants in the battle of Cahul. Afterwards, he worked in engineering and took part in the construction of Moscow and Saint-Petersburg, heading the pioneer service. He was in charge of the construction of the stone harbours in Saint- Petersburg, Kronshtadt and Riga. Amongst the implementation of his works, there is the naval shipyard of the city, the Bolchoï theater, the Ekaterininsky canal, the draining system of rain waters, the embankments of the Fontanka river in Saint-Petersburg, the hydraulic works of Taitsky and other hydro-technical works, as well as roads and forti cation works. He owned a house on the Quai de la Neva. Favourite of Catherine II, General Bauer married the widow of Colonel von Böhm, Lady of honour to the Czarina. CATHERINE II La Grande. 1729-1796. Très curieuse lettre de la Tsarine Catherine II, demandant à son favori, le général Bauer, de se renseigner à propos d’une « jeune beauté » [jünge Schönheit] dont les qualités lui ont été vantées ; le comte Orlov lui en a parlé trop tard pour qu’elle puisse s’en entretenir avec le général Orlov de façon privée ; elle demande donc de lui écrire discrètement quelques mots à ce sujet, en l’envoyant auprès du comte Orlov. Elle ajoute en postscriptum ; Tout ceci doit rester entre nous, vous pouvez dire que je vous ai commandé des cartes géographiques. D’origine prussienne, Friedrich-Wilhelm Bauer (1731-1783) était un of cier distingué depuis la Guerre de Sept Ans lorsqu’il entra au service de Catherine II en 1768. Il participe alors activement comme major-général dans la guerre contre Turcs, en réorganisant le service de cartographie, en étant un des acteurs de la bataille de Cahul. Il s’occupera plus tard d’ingénierie et prendra part à la construction de Moscou et de Saint-Pétersbourg, commande le service des pionniers. Il était responsable de la construction des ports en pierre à Saint-Pétersbourg, à Kronshtadt et à Riga. On compte parmi la mise en œuvre de ses projets le chantier naval de la ville, le théâtre du Bolchoï, le canal Ekaterininsky, le système de drainage des eaux pluviales, les rives de la rivière Fontanka à Saint-Pétersbourg, les ouvrages hydrauliques de Taitsky et d'autres ouvrages hydrotechniques, ainsi que des routes et des ouvrages de forti cation. Il possédait une maison sur le quai de la Neva. Favori de Catherine II, le général Bauer avait épousé la veuve du colonel von Böhm, dame d’honneur de la Tsarine.
