Fourteen albumen prints (dimensions vary: from 11 x 7 cm to 9 x 5 cm), pasted on original and contemporary cards, many with photogra- pher’s creadit printed on card, 10 photographs with manuscript notes in pencil on card, some marked “1930” and “1934”.
A collection of early studio images of the Russian people by the great photographic masters of the XIX century, with most photographs BEARING NOTES IN ALEXANDER BENOIS’S HAND. The types include street sellers, a coachmen, and a priest, as well as a Circas- sian and a Kalmyk woman.
Alexander Benois (1870-1960) was an in uential artist, art historian and one of the founders of “The World of Art” (Mir Isskusstva). His designs for the Ballets Russes under Sergei Diaghilev revolutionized the performace and experience of the ballet. Provenance: Alexandre Benois.
