LENINGRAD UNDERGROUND COLLECTION
SECOND WAVE OF RUSSIAN AVANTGARDE
1950 - 1980
Hermitage Fine Art presents the collection of Leningrad nonconformist artists from a private European collection.
The exhibition on July 4th and 5th at the Metropole Monte-Carlo hotel will open to the visitors a world of art, thirsting for freedom of thought and creativity.

Nonconformism (informal underground art in the USSR,) unites artists of various trends in fine art of the 1950-1980s, that was officially forbidden by the Soviet government.
Leningrad nonconformist artists were not part of the "The Artists' Union of the USSR" and were considered as dangerous elements of society.

They denied «socialist realism» ideas and a monopoly of one dominant opinion, continuing the traditions of the Silver Age and the Russian Avant-garde, glorified freedom of thinking and the force of the creative spirit, and fought for their access to mass spectators.

Despite their underground status, the art of nonconformists infiltrated the creative and scientific intelligentsia. Thousands of people visited "apartment exhibitions" in Leningrad.
The first official exhibitions of the underground art were held in Leningrad in 1974-1975 and had great success.
